Shatter is arguably the purest form of concentrated marijuana. It looks like a golden piece of glass with a candy-like consistency. Shatter also contains the highest concentrations of THC (or CBD), holding upwards of 80% of the active ingredient. It’s made using a solvent — most commonly butane — to pull THC along with other cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant matter in a process known as BHO extraction. Shatter may not be the easiest material to work with due to its solid state when it reaches the room temperature. You can melt it by heating it up in a vaporizer or a dedicated concentrate rig. Explore the wealth of different shatter strains and make the most out of the health benefits offered by marijuana concentrates.

How is Shatter made?

If you’re curious as to how Shatter comes into existence, you should know that the very first ingredient on your grocery list would be a solvent. That could be anything like CO2 or even butane. But, it should be potent enough to get the job done.

To produce BHO (Butane Hash Oil), wax, or CO2 Shatter, producers will place the cannabis into a container for holding. Then, they’ll force the solvent into it to get out the cannabinoids in their purest form.

You should keep in mind that this process isn’t exactly child’s play as it can be very dangerous. Anyone who goes into it should have a significant amount of knowledge and experience regarding how to handle the chemicals to be used. If the knowledge is there, but there is no experience, there should at least be supervision from someone who has both.

Relying on knowledge from YouTube videos have caused fires, injuries, and explosions in the past.

After extracting the cannabinoids, the chemical you’ll get is incredibly strong. It often has so much more THC than the regular amount you’ll in traditional cannabis plants. You should keep in mind that the consistency usually varies on a case-by-case basis.

Sometimes, the Shatter extracted can be oil. Other times, it can be a smooth and soft substance referred to as budder. In other cases, it is a crystallized material known as wax. But, in many cases, it comes out as Shatter, also known as dab and often smoked by dabbing.

Weed shatter is a type of cannabis concentrate that is known for its high THC count. THC levels on average range between 70-90%, whereas it is common for the average to lean towards the higher end.

Shatter is a hard amber substance that resembles a tinted sheet of glass when in its solid state, and belongs to the weed wax family. The reason why shatter looks the way it does is that it goes through a few extra steps during extraction; this gets rid of impurities like fats and lipids, giving it a clear glass-like appearance.

Shatter is definitely one of the purest, most potent marijuana concentrates. The most common method to use shatter wax is by dabbing it using a dab rig and due to its potency, the effects are normally felt immediately.

Effects of Shatter Weed

The best thing about shatter is that you get to smoke less plant material than normal buds and that it is one of the purest and most potent forms of concentrated marijuana in Canada.

All quality shatter will provide a heavy narcotic experience for the user. However, indica dominant shatter will generally induce more of a body high and sensations of relaxation, euphoria and lethargy.  Sativa dominant shatter tends to provide more of an uplifting and stimulating experience by increasing happiness and overall mood of users.

Medical Uses

Medical cannabis patients use shatter to treat chronic and lingering pains. Also, in micro doses, shatter can be effective in treating symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. Other common uses include to promote hunger, induce sleep, and to treat a slew of other conditions.

Negative Effects

The challenge with concentrates is that a potentially large dose might appear to be really small and harmless to the untrained eye. If you’re new to cannabis concentrates, we recommend against eyeballing your dose; start off really small and you’re good.

The most common side effects will be cottonmouth and dry/red eyes. Just keep water nearby and you will be fine. Also, because shatter weed is so potent, dizziness, nausea, paranoia, lethargy, and hallucinations can potentially occur if it is consumed in large amounts.

It is therefore important to take shatter in moderation and be responsible. It is best to start off slow and work your way up as tolerance levels increase. Just be sure to realize that even if negative effects occur, they are typically very minor and will go away with time.

Best Ways to Handle And Consume Shatter

Shatter is definitely the most notorious cannabis concentrate when it comes to handling and usability. Because it’s hard and glass-like, it doesn’t stick to dab tools very easily.

Even if you aren’t too familiar with the world of concentrates, you’ve likely heard of “dabbing” — it is the most common way to use cannabis concentrates like shatter. Basically, the shatter is placed on a tool called a nail (the “bowl” equivalent in a dab rig), which is then heated up with a heat gun to create smoke for inhalation.

To make sure you don’t waste any shatter, use a sharp tool to collect a tiny piece; the size of a small bead. Be careful while handling it — if it is too brittle and you apply more pressure than what’s needed, half of your dose can go flying across the table.

Another common method to take shatter is by vaping it. It is even possible to smoke it in a bong or a pipe; simply add a little to the bowl. However, these methods are harder since it is difficult to reach high enough temperatures that stay consistent throughout the heating process.

If you don’t have any of these weed accessories on hand, you can even just add a little bit to a regular joint and smoke it that way.

Things to be Wary of While Using Shatter

As we’ve established earlier, shatter is a highly concentrated form of cannabis with a lot more THC than usual. If you don’t use it properly, you might be exposing yourself to avoidable health risks. As such, if you want to buy shatter online in Canada, you have to use it responsibly. Here are the things you should be wary of while using the drug:

  1. Overconsumption

If you’re a regular cannabis user but not a shatter smoker, you might be confused. After all, cannabis is pretty well-known for its safety, and you can hardly have too much kush. But, things are slightly different with Shatter.

You see, because the compound is so densely concentrated, there’s a lot more THC than you’re used to consuming. You have to be extra careful to make sure that you don’t accidentally take too much. To do this, make a conscious effort not to take the same dosage you’ll take if you were using your regular cannabis.

If you do, you’re not very likely to die from it. This is because there are hardly any recorded cases of fatal THC overdose without underlying medical conditions. However, while death might not be an immediate threat, you won’t like the experience that comes with having too much THC in your system.

Among other things, you might feel an increased heart rate, higher anxiety levels, and feelings of disorientation. Apart from that, you might also suffer from nausea, vomiting, paranoia, etc. All these would be significantly more likely to happen to you if you’re predisposed towards mental illnesses like anxiety disorder or schizophrenia. So, as much as you can, avoid over-consuming the product.

  1. Impurities

Regular cannabis is gotten straight from mother nature and is easily prepared to be smoked. Shatter, on the other hand, is a byproduct of cannabis, made by man. As such, there is the possibility that it could have impurities.

When any manufacturer is in the process of creating Shatter, they are meant to flush out butane and every other solvent. However, after flushing it out, it is impossible to tell if all of the solvents have been taken out. The only way to do this is by taking it to a lab and testing it. Unfortunately, not everyone has the resources to get this done.

Some other types of impurities might make you go to the bathroom a couple of times. But, accidentally taking in solvents and other impurities are significantly more dangerous. This is especially so for those who already have challenges with their immune systems and have to use concentrates medically.

To be sure that you’re not getting any impurities, always make sure you’re buying from a trusted source. A proper manufacturer will make sure that they test their Shatter as much as possible to eliminate impurities. A proper dispensary will make sure they only supply the most trustworthy Shatter in Canada.

Is Shatter Edible?

Yes, you can eat this. However, the results will vary depending on such factors as decarboxylation and consumption method. Nevertheless, to get the best effects, you should eat it with oil or fat. That way, it’ll be properly absorbed into your digestive tract

Alternatives

As previously mentioned, shatter is a part of the weed wax family.  Shatter is what weed wax is called when it is in a solid and glass like form.  If the consistency of the weed wax is softer and less viscous, then it is normally referred to as budder.  If it is hard and crumbly, then it is referred to as crumble wax. Budder and crumble typically have less THC levels as shatter, but they are much easier to work with.

Other cannabis concentrates would include weed oil, THC distillate, live resin and hash.  This is not a comprehensive list, as there are many different products available.  Live resin and terp sauce would be the choice if you want something more flavorful and as close to the taste and smell of normal cannabis buds.

THC distillate is what you would get if you wanted something as pure as possible as the majority of compounds other than THC is removed from the final product. However, the terpenes are removed as well.

If smoking is not your thing, then marijuana edibles are worth a shot. As long as the THC is activated, it can be infused in any type of food imaginable and consumed for a long lasting and powerful high. Cannabinoids react differently with the body when ingesting it, so it is recommended to start with small doses and work your way up.

There is also cannabis oils that can be ingested. Just place a few drops under your tongue to enjoy the benefits.
